Children and bicycles: instructions for use

Family cycling on Lac de Tignes

Everything moms and dads need to know about biking with kids is here!

How to get started

Step 1: Learn the basic position on the bike: pedals horizontal, body centered on the bike, elbows out like duck wings, eyes straight ahead.

Step 2: Practice, practice, practice!

Step 3: Try new environments to improve cycling skills:

  • Pumptrack: ride the waves and master the bumps. Head for Val Claret to discover Tignes’ pumptrack!
  • Bike land: play and learn new skills over bumps, small jumps, mini-bridges…
  • The bike park: discover trails particularly suited to beginners and families (like the Bollinette and Popeye on the linked Tignes – Val d’Isère bike park).

Why do kids ride mountain bikes?

It’s the most effective way for children to let off steam, while being active outdoors. For many, it’s one of the healthiest activities we can give our children. And it’s all about having fun!

WARNING: Do not buy a mountain bike that is too big.

Essential equipment

  • Which mountain bike to buy? The most important thing is to choose the right size (and the lightest possible weight).
  • The helmet is the most important bicycle accessory. Never ride without one. The helmet must fit perfectly.
  • In the world of cycling, safety always comes first. Make sure children wear: sunglasses, long-fingered gloves, knee pads and back protection.

A few tips from the pros

Karen Eller (three-time winner of the Transalp Challenge) and Holger Meyer (former World Cup professional), parents of two children, will be happy to advise you:

  • Never ride with your children on trails that are (too) difficult!
  • Don’t always ride in pole position! Celebrate the descents, not the climbs! Lead by example!
  • Make sure your children have the right kit
  • Make sure you have enough food and drink! Make sure you always have these three things: fun, joy and laughter!
