Tignes villages
Offbeat, cosmopolitan, sporty and innovative, Tignes offers you a unique opportunity to experience the mountains in a different way.
The birth of the winter sports resort
Whether you’re a fan of 100% skiing, family holidays, authenticity or late-night partying, Tignes reveals all its facets to help you choose the area that suits you best for your holiday!
Back in 1936, pioneering Tignes welcomed its first tourists on the village’s only ski lift.
After the construction of the dam in 1952 and the drowning of Vieux Tignes under the waters, Tignes bounced back and rose to an altitude of 2,100 metres, in the heart of a unique 360° cirque.
In the 1970s, Tignes underwent a metamorphosis and quickly became the international and legendary resort it is today.
Did you know?
Tignes was voted ‘Most Sporting Town’ by L’Equipe magazine in 2008… Since then, the resort has been welcoming major sports teams to perfect their training (Visma-Lease a bike, Decathlon AG2R La Mondiale, Bora-Hansgrohe, Cofidis, as well as the women’s teams Visma-Lease a bike, FDJ-SUEZ, the French Handball team, as well as football and rugby teams).
Tignes les Brévières : back to basics
At the foot of the dam, at an altitude of 1,550m, lies the village of Les Brévières and its traditional chalets, where it’s great to curl up on a cosy winter’s evening with a fondue or raclette by the fire! At Les Brévières, it’s all about conviviality. Authentic restaurants, larch trees and a direct link to Tignes 1800 make the village of Les Brévières a charming, practical and welcoming place.
In summer, the banks of the Isère are ideal for walks and barbecues, as well as outdoor activities such as tennis and children’s games.
Tignes 1800 : the Renaissance of the sunken village
The resort’s new village between Tignes les Brévières and Tignes le Lac opened its doors in December 2013.
Organised around its church, a replica of the one in the old village drowned under the waters of the dam, Tignes 1800 lets you enjoy all the benefits of an international resort, with the peace and quiet of the village spirit to boot!
Stone and wood chalets, direct access to the 300km of pistes in the ski area (see link to ski area page) thanks to the Les Boisses gondola (seats 8), a ski-in/ski-out return, a host of on-site services to make life easier, and a specially-designed area for beginner skiers: the village of Tignes 1800 has been specially designed with families in mind!
A little culture: the church of Tignes 1800
The parish church of Saint Jacques de Tignes, built in the 1950s, is a replica of the one destroyed when the dam was built. It contains a wealth of furnishings and Baroque paintings.
