The Aiguille de la Grande Sassière hike
For seasoned hikers only! Located on the Franco-Italian border, the Aiguille de la Grande Sassière is the highest hike in France, reaching an altitude of 3,747 m. Accessible in summer without mountaineering equipment (as soon as the snow melts), this climb follows a mountain crest surrounded by lauzes (stone slabs).
A mythical summit
At the summit, the rewards are well worth the effort: a phenomenal 360° view of all the Northern Alps (French, Italian and Swiss) and the indescribable sensation of being on the roof of the world. In short, unforgettable!
The topo
- 1,500 metres of ascent and descent
- 11 km round trip
- Duration: approx. 7 hours
- Departure from the Saut parking lot
The hike starts from the “Saut” parking lot at an altitude of 2,300 metres, which is also the starting point for hikes from Lac de la Sassière and Col de la Baillettaz.
On the left, the trail heads straight up the slope (“Dré dans l’pentu” as we say in Savoie), through the alpine pastures of “Plan de la Casette”. The landscape quickly changes to become more mineral as you approach the ridges above 3,000 metres. A tricky passage takes you up to the edge of the Sassière glacier. The trail then evolves on a relative flat, bordered on the left by the glacier and on the right by the Sassière cliffs. The “aiguille” finally rises in front of us, with 300 metres of ascent remaining. The slope steepens and the path twists and turns to reach 3,747 meters. Enjoy the view of the most beautiful peaks in the Alps. Return down the same path.
A difficult hike…
The hike to the summit of Grande Sassière is an itinerary not to be underestimated. The route requires a long and intense physical effort, due to the steep gradient and the long distance involved. Note also that the terrain is sometimes difficult and may seem airy to some people who are sensitive to this aspect.
Don’t embark on this adventure unless you’re sure of yourself. If you have any doubts about the route, the weather or the conditions on the Aiguille (it can snow even in August at the summit!), don’t hesitate to ask at the tourist office.
A few tips
- Ideal period: between late July and September (after the snow has melted and before the first winter snowfalls).
- Weather: Be sure to check the weather forecast before you leave. Leave early to avoid thunderstorms at the end of the day.
- Clothing: remember to bring warm clothes with you. Even in summer, the altitude and winds make it very cold up there.
- Ask a mountain professional to accompany you
