On July 4, 2021, Tignes had the joy of welcoming the arrival of the 9th stage of the Tour de France 2021, as well as the first day of rest on Monday, July 5. A great revenge on the 2019 edition, where Tignes had marked History in a funny way, by becoming the first town NOT to host the stage, stopped dead at the Col de l'Isera by a storm of rare intensity.
Ben O’Connor, 25, claimed his first win at the Tour de France in his first participation at the end of another rain soaked stage in the Alps. He got rid of his Colombian breakaway companions to become the 14th Australian stage winner for a total of 35 victories since Phil Anderson in 1982. The AG2R-Citroën rider virtually had the yellow jersey on the road but Tadej Pogacar responded to a late attack by Richard Carapaz to remain in the lead of the overall classification ahead of the first rest day.
Tignes has of course a thought for the most Tignaddict of the Slovenes, Primož Roglič (Team Jumbo Visma), who trains regularly in our resort but who could not take the start of the stage due to injury. He was celebrated as it should be by his fans when he arrived by car!
A big thank you to the riders for their fighting spirit throughout the stage, to the supporters who braved the rain to transmit all their energy to the cyclists in competition, to the volunteers without whom nothing would be possible, and to the staff who worked hard for months to celebrate the Tour de France as it should! Long live the Tour!
The start will be in Haute-Savoie, in Cluses (505m). The runners will start their ascent towards Megève then take the direction of Beaufortain via the Col des Saisies (1650m). From the village of Beaufort (725m), they will tackle Cormet de Roselend (1968m) and its 1,243m drop! Arrived in Tarentaise, 1,277m of vertical drop still awaits our runners for the final ascent to Tignes (2113m) via Les Brévières.

Spotlight on women's cycling, with the "Donnons des Elles au Vélo" operation: 12 amateur-level women cyclists who complete the same stages on D-1 as the Tour de France peloton to promote the women's cycling.
Rendezvous around 6.30pm on Saturday July 3 to encourage them at the finish of the Tignes climb!
